UGANDA – THE PEARL OF AFRICA

uganda

Uganda is a landlocked country in Eastern-Central Africa, known as the Pearl of Africa. It is culturally and ecologically biodiverse and borders Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, South Sudan, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Uganda lies on the equator and is home to the world’s highest concentration of primates, including gorillas and chimpanzees. A scenically rich country of fertile agricultural land, mountains and lakes makes travel a fascinating adventure. Rare sightings of the Shoebill Stork from a dug-out canoe are a wonderful experience unique to Uganda.

Uganda gained independence on October 9, 1962. The borders of Uganda define an arbitrary division between societies, people, religions and languages. The Bantu migrated from the South, and the Nilotic and Sudanic people from the north. The British prioritized the south socially and economically. As a result, the Bantu emerged to dominate academic, judicial and religious positions, establishing an economic power in the south. However, the north provided the British with armed forces and military power, and this imbalance defined the political, social and economic landscape in post-colonial Uganda.
